Intent
At St Mary’s, Physical education and sport is vital and runs through our school day, giving children the opportunity to participate during and after school. We believe children who are active and engage in Physical Education are more motivated to learn in the classroom and benefit from healthier lifestyles. We deliver PE sessions that not only help the children physically but help to aid their social and mental development. Our aim as a school for Physical Education is:
- Provide opportunities for all children to participate in physical activity during and out of school time with a range of afterschool clubs available every night
- Provide pathways and opportunities for our pupils to excel in sport
- Be proud of our individual achievements
- Build upon resilience, determination and respect through PE
- Strengthen friendships by developing communication, teamwork and confidence
- Provide quality opportunities for children within and outside of school time
- Allow every child to represent our school in a cluster competition or development event
- Consistently deliver a high quality of PE utilising the PE Passport
Implementation
We have long, medium and short term plans for every child across a range of sports to help aid their physical development. We provide equal opportunity to learn and develop while engaging the children in fun, educational sporting activities. We also give the children opportunities to develop their water safety.
All teachers:
- Will participate in CPD to develop their understanding of the PE Passport to support the teaching of PE
- Use photography elements within the Passport to provide accurate and insightful feedback and assessment to children.
- Have high expectations of pupils within the lessons
- Ensure that all children have an active role within PE lessons and extra-curricular activities
- Help develop the whole child to ensure they are aided by problem solving, social and life skills as well as the physical side
Impact
- Children use sport to develop life skills that they transfer into their lives out of sport
- Children use extracurricular experiences and club links to progress further with sport in the local community
- Develop understanding of the benefits of physical activity and school sport
- All children have an opportunity to showcase skills in a range of intra, inter and trust competitions
- Children set personal goals to work towards
- Teachers provide children with accurate assessments based on learning from high quality PE lessons using the PE Passport
- A whole school ethos of celebrating personal and team achievements with sport at the centre
It’s our mission to positively impact upon the lives of all our pupils, equipping them with skills and attitudes that will open up a world of enjoyment, experience and achievement. We use PE, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) to help them grow in confidence and achieve better mental and physical health that will continue into adulthood and beyond.

Sports Premium
At St. Mary’s, we inspire children to participate and compete in a variety of sports and fitness which they look forward to and love.
All children, at all levels, can take part in collaborative and competitive activities. We believe Physical Education has a huge impact on wellbeing, social and learning behaviours. Being active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is fundamental to children’s education. Children at St. Mary’s are given opportunities to learn a variety of sports and activities, learning life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, respect, and self-belief.
We encourage children to take part in competitions and events in collaboration with other local schools, which gives an invaluable opportunity to develop social skills and sportsmanship. We aim to develop a passion for Physical Education that will stay with the children into adulthood.
